School History

Port Houston Elementary, a public school located in Houston, Texas, sits in a large urban setting near the Houston Ship Channel and the Port of Houston. Built in 1909, the school is nestled within an industrial, predominantly Hispanic community where petrochemical plants and trucking companies are common.

Often considered the heart of the community, Port Houston Elementary serves approximately 300 students in grades PK–5, including those in Early Childhood Special Education and Structured Learning Classes. The school population is evenly split between male and female students, with 99% identified as economically disadvantaged and 97.5% as minority enrollment. Additionally, 84.1% of students are considered at risk, and 67.9% participate in bilingual, ESL, or dual language programs.
